California 78th Assembly District Office Internship

Brian Beyersdorf ’09 has the following opportunity available:

The California 78th Assembly District Office Internship (unpaid) offers high school and college students a unique opportunity to participate in and experience the work of a California State Assembly office. The program exposes students to district office operations and the grass roots activities of a legislator’s work. These experiences include working with constituents, conducting community outreach efforts, assisting community-based organizations, organizing civic events and projects, database development and upkeep, staffing the office, and other activities.

Assemblymember Marty Block was elected in November 2008 to represent the 78th District, one of the most diverse districts in the county of San Diego including the cities and communities of San Diego, Chula Vista, Bonita, Lemon Grove, and Spring Valley. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed by Speaker Bass to the Assembly Leadership as the Assistant Majority Whip and subsequently by Speaker Pérez as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Higher Education. For more information about Assemblymember Block, visit his website: http://asmdc.org/members/a78/.

Please e-mail a resume and writing sample to brian.beyersdorf@asm.ca.gov. Your writing sample (no more than 500 words) should address the following: “As a new Assemblymember my top priorities would be…” If you have any questions, feel free to call me at my office: 619-462-7878.

Cory Osth ’98 Seeking Event Management/Govt. Liaison Position

I am looking for opportunities to use my diverse career experience in an Event Management or Planning position.

I have helped grow a start up retail store from a concept to a major player in the San Diego market. We have accomplished this through the use of creative marketing, sticking to our core beliefs, and by creating and supporting high profile athletic events.

My experience with managing events from concept to execution will be useful for an employer seeking someone that can plan and manage various events, quickly and creatively solve problems, and act as a liaison between the company and any government or private entities that are needed to approve or permit the event. I am accustomed to working with a small team in a very chaotic, busy environment.

Sean R Fitzgerald ’14 – Looking for Paid Summer Internship

I am an Accounting and Economics Double Major with a 3.193 GPA. I am looking for a paid summer internship in the San Diego area. I am currently taking Econometrics and I know through this class how to use Stata, a statistical analysis and data management software. I would like to find out if I want to do statistical analysis or accounting as my future career path.

However, I also have extensive experience leading several events/groups at the University of Notre Dame including being a Student Planning Committee Member and the Volunteer Coordinator for the 2012 Holy Half Marathon. Based on this experience, I would also be interested in an Event Planning internship position.

Notre Dame Receives Big Thank You from Nativity Prep

Nativity Prep 'Breakfast of Champions'

You have probably seen the name Nativity Prep mentioned in occasional email. Some of you have included an additional donation for Nativity Prep when sending in your dues since it is one of the additional line items the club includes on its Membership Forms.

Nativity Prep was founded in 2001 by Notre Dame Law Student Dave Rivera. The school provides college-preparatory instruction for low income students in San Diego’s inner city. One of the ways our club assists this program is by providing Thanksgiving meals to the students and their families. This Thanksgiving Dinner Donation program was started several years ago by our current Region 3 Alumni Director, Barney King ’70.

Tim Schenck, Joe Jordan, Dave Rivera, William Ortiz, Barney King

Barney King and the Notre Dame Alumni Club of San Diego received a big Thank You from the Principal of Nativity Prep, Brendan Sullivan, in front of a few hundred supporters of Nativity Prep during Wednesday’s ‘Breakfast of Champions’ program. The students, their families, and the staff of Nativity Prep are very grateful for all of the assistance provided by our Club.

In addition to Dave Rivera, two of our alums, Joe Jordan ’64 and Stephen Toohill ’82 serve as Board Members for Nativity Prep. Many more members of the Notre Dame Community have served as teachers, tutors, mentors, and volunteers for Nativity Prep.

If you would like to learn more about Nativity Prep, you can visit their Annual Report page and contact Dave Rivera at 619-549-1810.

From my personal perspective, it’s been quite amazing to watch Dave take a vision he used to share with anyone who would listen to him at Young Alumni events back in ’99 to a program that has not only helped inner city students move on to graduate from high school but now have students who are reaching graduation from college.
