Citrus Bowl Game Watch – 2 Locations Open (Crust, Social Tap)

Hello San Diego Notre Dame Family:

Some of you are wondering if we’re getting together for Citrus Bowl game watches – yes we are! Read below for the details:

Citrus Bowl Game Watch
Monday, January 1st, 10:00 am (Pacific Time)
This game is a bit on the early side for New Year’s Day, but we’ve confirmed that both Crust Pizza and Social Tap will open their doors to welcome Irish fans for a Citrus Bowl Watch. Alas, Rosati’s in Vista will not be open. If you follow the odds makers, this one will be close – LSU currently is favored by 3 points. It’s hard to find much in the stats to highlight as a clear differentiator, as LSU seems to have the same general strengths and weaknesses as the Irish – perhaps not as good on the run, but better with the pass, but not dramatically so on either count. It should be a great matchup! Here’s where we’ll be: Social Tap – Downtown San Diego adjacent to Petco Park • Crust Pizzeria – Carmel Valley

Go Irish, Beat Tigers!

Stanford Game Watch, ND-Navy 2018 Tickets, STEAM Fest

Hello San Diego Notre Dame Family:

I hope everyone had a safe & happy Thanksgiving. As we get into the Christmas season, our events slow down a bit, but we still have a big game watch & a volunteer opportunity for you:

Stanford Game Watch
Saturday, November 25th, 5:00 pm (Pacific Time)
Looking over the stats on my favorite CFB stats site, my conclusion is that Stanford and Notre Dame are two very evenly matched teams. There aren’t many categories where you can find a meaningful difference, which probably explains the game line (ND by 2.5) and ESPN’s power-rank matchup predictor (Stanford 50.2%, ND 49.8%). Stanford’s record is hard to extrapolate to this game, early season losses to USC and San Diego State and a Nov 2nd away loss to #25 Washington State contrast with a Nov 10th win over then #9 Washington which, interestingly, means that the game that decides whether Stanford goes to the PAC-12 championship game takes place two states north of and simultaneous with our game (WSU vs. Washington). Will an Irish quest for 10 wins + a possibly distracted Stanford team provide an edge for the Irish in Palo Alto? Join us to find out, this will likely be another great game. Here’s where we’ll be: Social Tap – Downtown San Diego adjacent to Petco Park • Crust Pizzeria – Carmel Valley • Rosati’s Pizza Pub – Vista

ND-Navy 2018 in San Diego

Miami (FL) Game Watch, Halloween Candy Collection, Nativity Prep Thanksgiving

Hello San Diego Notre Dame Family:

This week we’ve got the game watch info, a heads up regarding ND Navy 2018 tickets, and the Halloween candy collection and Nativity Prep info:

Miami (FL) Game Watch
Saturday, November 11th, 5:00 pm (Pacific Time)
Quite possibly the biggest game of the year this week, Irish fans. Those of us from the “Catholics vs. Convicts” era always have a special desire to beat the Hurricanes of Miami, and much like those days, this game has National Championship implications. #7 Miami comes into this game undefeated at 8-0, but the stats definitely give the Irish an edge. Notre Dame is 18-7-1 vs. Miami, and are 3-0 in the Brian Kelly era. Perhaps more significantly, since beating Toledo in late September, the Hurricanes have scored at most 31 points (Duke) and otherwise have been sub-30, while the Irish with one exception (Georgia) haven’t scored less than 33, finishing at nearly 50 in 5 of those games. Miami has some respectable defensive stats though (#12 in scoring defense, #11 in tackles-for-loss, #4 in turnover margin) so we’ll need to be stout on offense. The Irish are currently 3.5-point favorites, and once again the ESPN Power Index gives the Irish a 62% chance of winning. Oh yes, as the big game of the week, ESPN is hosting College Game Day from Miami and the prime time broadcast on ABC will be called by Fowler & Herbstreit. In summary: huge game. Whether you are an alumni, parent of a current (or former) student, or just love Notre Dame, we’d love to have you watch the game with us! Here’s where we’ll be: Social Tap – Downtown San Diego adjacent to Petco Park • Crust Pizzeria – Carmel Valley • Rosati’s Pizza Pub – Vista

Announcements will be going out shortly with more details thru this FB page and email to all Club members.

Wake Forest Game Watch, Halloween Candy Collection, Nativity Prep Thanksgiving

Hello San Diego Notre Dame Family:

In addition to the weekly game watch, this week we’ve got details on two of our more popular community service projects:

Wake Forest Game Watch
Saturday, November 4th, 12:30 pm (Pacific Time)
What a difference a year makes! Last year after 8 games, the Irish had won only three, and were headed for a first week in November loss to Navy. This year, our beloved Irish are 7-1, having lost by only 1 point to the current #2 team, AND we find ourselves in the running for a spot in the national championship playoffs. Awesome! This week we have another very winnable game vs. 5-3 Wake Forest. Probably nothing to worry about here, the Irish remain formidable on the ground (#6) which matches up well against the Demon Decons’ 89th-ranked run defense. Wake’s only notable stat is that they’re #1 nationally in tackles-for-loss (9.25) but even 17 TFLs didn’t result in a victory over Florida State. Bottom line, this should be a good game to watch the Irish build a comfortable lead, then spend the rest of the game socializing with your Irish family at one of our game watch locations. Kickoff is again perfectly timed for a late lunch. Whether you are an alumni, parent of a current (or former) student, or just love Notre Dame, we’d love to have you with us! Here’s where we’ll be: Social Tap – Downtown San Diego adjacent to Petco Park • Crust Pizzeria – Carmel Valley • Rosati’s Pizza Pub – Vista

NC State Game Watch, Steam Maker Fair Volunteers

Hello San Diego Notre Dame Family:

Huge game this week, perhaps you’ve heard?

NC State Game Watch
Saturday, October 21st, 12:30 pm (Pacific Time)
In the wake of last week’s domination of the Trojans, the #9 Irish face another tough opponent this week, the #14 Wolfpack of NC State. ESPN’s power index gives Notre Dame a 76.9% probability of scoring their first victory over NC State in a series that currently stands at 2-0. Unlike last week’s matchup however, this week pits our 6th-ranked rushing offense (341 YPG) vs. a 6th-ranked rushing defense (for reference, UGA is #4). On the other hand, NC state’s passing defense ranks a dismal #122, which will make an interesting matchup with ND’s #118-ranked passing offense,
so this may be the week we finally see an exciting Irish passing game. Really the only other notable stat is that NC State struggles in the red zone, reaching the end-zone only 60% of the time. The game line favors ND by 7.5, so oddsmakers agree that the Irish will probably win this one, but it looks like we’ll have to do it through the air. Kickoff is perfectly timed for a late lunch, which means it’s a great week to join us at one of our three game watch locations!

USC Game Watch, Volunteers Needed for STEAM Fest

Hello San Diego Notre Dame Family:

Huge game this week, perhaps you’ve heard?

USC Game Watch!
Saturday, October 21st, 4:30 pm (Pacific Time)
Well, they don’t get much bigger than this. The #11 Trojans of So. Cal. travel back to the house that Rockne built to face our #13 Irish. ESPN’s matchup page power index has the Irish as 78.3% likely to take this one, and current Vegas odds give the Irish the game by 3.5, just a hair over the usual home advantage bonus. Comparative stats are really close for this game. Notre Dame has an edge over USC in Scoring Offense (#13 vs. #36), Run Offense (#5 vs. #53) and Red Zone Conversions (#18 vs. #74). The Trojans have an edge over the Irish in Passing Offense (#19 vs. #116) and Sacks (#7 vs #58). So it looks like this one will be decided based on who steps up on defense and blunts the opponent’s strength. USC is beatable, and this game is in our house. If you’re local, you definitely want to experience the energy of a victory over USC surrounded by your local ND Family! Whether your an alumni, parent of a current (or former) student, or just love Notre Dame, you’re welcome to join us! Here’s how to find us: Social Tap – Downtown San Diego adjacent to Petco Park • Crust Pizzeria – Carmel Valley • Rosati’s Pizza Pub – Vista

UNC Game Watch, NDWC Wine Tasting & Fall Crawl

Hello San Diego Notre Dame Family:

Here are the events coming up in the next few weeks:

North Carolina Game Watch!
Saturday, October 7th, 12:30 pm (Pacific Time)
Our beloved Irish have another very manageable opponent this week in 1-4 UNC. Looking over the usual key points, the only one that might give one pause is that UNC managed to pile up 35 points against #17 Louisville a few weeks ago. While it’s best not to look past these games, UNCs weaknesses (#105 in scoring defense, and #113 in rushing defense) seem to play right into Notre Dame’s strengths (#14 scoring offense, #7 rushing offense, Josh Adams, #7 in the country with 130 YPG). Should be a great non-stressful game to get together with your local ND family, have some lunch and cheer the Irish to victory. You don’t need to be a club member, ND grad or even San Diego resident to join us for a game watch, you just need to love ND football. Here’s how to find us: Social Tap – Downtown San Diego adjacent to Petco Park • Crust Pizzeria – Carmel Valley • Rosati’s Pizza Pub – Vista

Your $15 ($20 at the door) includes pizza at Basic, a raffle ticket, and at least one specialty cocktail. Drink specials available for purchase. All attendees must be 21+ and sign a liability waiver upon arrival. The event will probably max out their 150 person capacity, so get your registration in early. Miami (OH) Game Watch, Club Luncheon (10/5), ND Women Connect (10/15), Fall Crawl (10/14)

Hello San Diego Notre Dame Family:

Here are the events coming up in the next few weeks:

Miami (OH) Game Watch!
Saturday, September 30th, 2:00 pm (Pacific Time)
One of the most important things to know about this next game is that NBC is televising it on their NBCSN channel, so it will only be available to those who receive that network. If you’re one of those left out of this one, it’s the perfect weekend to join us at one of our game watch locations! You’ll see the game and get to hang out with your local Irish family. As for the interesting game tidbits, the Irish have only faced the Redhawks of Miami (OH) once before, prior to WWI (1909), a game the Irish won 46-0. The line on this game isn’t quite that large (Irish by 21) but it looks like the Irish are a good bet to come away with their 4th win of the season.

Club Luncheon, Presented by the Senior Alumni: “Human Trafficking”
Thursday, October 5th, 1130 – Social gathering, 1200 – Lunch
Lomas Santa Fe Country Club (1505 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Solana Beach)
Lunch Cost: $18.00 (Tip and Tax included)
Please RSVP to: Frank Whitton ’56 at 760-438-9400 (to ensure enough tables and lunch)

9th Annual Fall Crawl (RSVP Link)
Saturday, October 14th, 11:30am – 5:00pm
Every year, our (mostly young) alumni compete with other local alumni groups in this annual tradition organized by the Duke club. Stops along the crawl will include Basic (starting point), EVTB, Knotty Barrel, Social Tap, and The Deck at Moonshine Flats (In that order). You do not need to be officially a young alum to participate, by the way. Register at this link, and feel free to drop a note to our young alumni email so we know to look for you via the youngalumni@ndsandiego.org e-mail address.

BC Game Watch, Hesburgh Lecture (9/28), Club Luncheon (10/5)

Hello San Diego Notre Dame Family:

Here are the events coming up in the next few weeks:

BC Game Watch!
Saturday, September 16th, 12:30 pm (Pacific Time)
After a tough Georgia contest, our beloved Irish hit the road this week to take on the Eagles of BC. Note that game time has been revised to a 12:30pm (local) start. BC is 1-1 and is #118 in scoring offense after 2 games with 16.5PPG (vs. the Irish at #54 averaging 34). The Irish are currently 13-point favorites and are sitting on a 5-game winning streak vs. the Eagles. To summarize, the quantitative analysis favors the Irish. You don’t need to be a club member, ND grad or even San Diego resident to join us, you just need to love ND football. Here’s how to find us: Social Tap – Downtown San Diego adjacent to Petco Park • Crust Pizzeria – Carmel Valley • Rosati’s Pizza Pub – Vista
