April 22, 2012

Having just returned from attending the annual Alumni Senate back on campus, I wanted to send my thanks to the Club’s members for the support which enables this trip. I’d like to pay you back in part by recapping some of the high points.

While acting as our Club’s representative back on campus, I had the opportunity to:

meet with Alyssa Moya (’10) our impressive Area Admissions Counselor. Among other topics, we discussed the highly competitive admissions process — while this year’s stats aren’t yet published, applications increased vs. last year, while the target number of new freshmen remains as it has for years at just under 2,000.

meet with our two 2012 Summer Service Learning Program (SSLP) students, Lucy and Mike, who will be spending summer 2012 working at the local Boys & Girls Clubs. The local SSLP is an annual partnership we’ve had with The Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego and is possible due to the generous financial support of Boys and Girls Clubs and those who attend our Club’s annual Golf Tournament.

see the new buildings and hear about the latest in the continuing construction projects on campus. I walked through the amazing Compton Family Ice Arena, and the superb Stinson-Remick Hall of Engineering. In terms of future facilities, there is the still-under-construction Stayer Center for Executive Education. During the formal Senate presentations, Notre Dame’s Executive Vice President John Affleck-Graves briefed us on the upcoming Morris Inn renovation. This project will create a new facade matching the rest of the campus, make the rooms a bit larger, and the plans also include a new ballroom which will replace the perennial white tent. Finally, I took the time for my first visit to Eddy Street Commons, though I admit I only actually visited O’Rourke’s Public House…

hear from a number of members of the Athletic Department, including a great talk by Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Brey at the first evening’s dinner. Coach Brey talked about how impressed he was with this year’s team for stepping up and overcoming early season adversity. In response to an alum’s question he also briefly addressed the story of one of his recruits, Eric Katenda. Though Eric was blinded in one eye before coming back to campus, he is still with the team and he is still earning his Notre Dame degree. During our last day, AD Swarbrick and two of his assistants talked a few of their areas of focus. These include community outreach efforts, programs to prepare student-athletes for successful careers after graduation, and examples of how the media department is sharing the personal and inspirational stories of ND student-athletes. We saw a number of specific examples, including the amazing story of Fencer Teddy Hodges (’11), a couple of promotions with Soccer Players Lindsay Brown (’13) and Melissa Henderson (’12), and a teaser video for the NBC Sports Network documentary about Men’s Lacrosse, “Inside the Walls of Arlotta.”

attend a number of presentations designed to help our club serve you better. I met with other clubs of our size from around the country, and also had a session with clubs from our region. I attended informational presentations on how to run an effective club, how to ensure we’re taking advantage of football tickets, and how we can achieve the best involvement by you, our fellow members of the Notre Dame community.

network with other Club leaders, from Orange County to New York and from Seattle to Alabama. I even spent some time talking with really friendly folks who are restarting a club in Toronto … previously they lived in Sacramento, and during those days they partnered with our Club on the Campbell’s Soup runs that some of you may remember from years ago.

Finally, on a personal note, I enjoyed attending the Senate Mass held at my old home Alumni Hall (Go Dawgs!), visiting the Grotto, attending Saturday evening mass at Sacred Heart, and just generally be back at a place that has been such an influential part of my life.

So again, please accept my heartfelt thanks to you the San Diego Club members for supporting our club and thereby enabling me to represent you at Senate this year. I will do my best to repay you over the next year by putting what I learned to work.

Go Irish!
Ken Stimeling (’90)
Vice President
Alumni Schools Coordinator

The Notre Dame Club of San Diego is looking for a volunteer to serve as the next Communications Chair. The primary duty of the position is to promote the activities of the club via our website, email, and social media. While it might be helpful at times to have some technical experience with website development or maintenance, it is certainly not a requirement of the position. The communications for the club have been streamlined over the last year or two, making it easy to push out content updates for the club.

If you have any questions about the position or might be interested in serving the club in this capacity, please contact the existing Communications Chair, Steve Ratay, at sratay@ndsandiego.org. Thank you!
