Notre Dame Receives Big Thank You from Nativity Prep

Nativity Prep 'Breakfast of Champions'

You have probably seen the name Nativity Prep mentioned in occasional email. Some of you have included an additional donation for Nativity Prep when sending in your dues since it is one of the additional line items the club includes on its Membership Forms.

Nativity Prep was founded in 2001 by Notre Dame Law Student Dave Rivera. The school provides college-preparatory instruction for low income students in San Diego’s inner city. One of the ways our club assists this program is by providing Thanksgiving meals to the students and their families. This Thanksgiving Dinner Donation program was started several years ago by our current Region 3 Alumni Director, Barney King ’70.

Tim Schenck, Joe Jordan, Dave Rivera, William Ortiz, Barney King

Barney King and the Notre Dame Alumni Club of San Diego received a big Thank You from the Principal of Nativity Prep, Brendan Sullivan, in front of a few hundred supporters of Nativity Prep during Wednesday’s ‘Breakfast of Champions’ program. The students, their families, and the staff of Nativity Prep are very grateful for all of the assistance provided by our Club.

In addition to Dave Rivera, two of our alums, Joe Jordan ’64 and Stephen Toohill ’82 serve as Board Members for Nativity Prep. Many more members of the Notre Dame Community have served as teachers, tutors, mentors, and volunteers for Nativity Prep.

If you would like to learn more about Nativity Prep, you can visit their Annual Report page and contact Dave Rivera at 619-549-1810.

From my personal perspective, it’s been quite amazing to watch Dave take a vision he used to share with anyone who would listen to him at Young Alumni events back in ’99 to a program that has not only helped inner city students move on to graduate from high school but now have students who are reaching graduation from college.

Information for all Notre Dame Alumni & Fans in San Diego

This past weekend, you should have received an email from Tim Schenck regarding membership in the Notre Dame Club of San Diego. If you did not receive the email, please forward your email address to Tim because he either does not have it on file or has an old one on file for you.

In a couple weeks, we will be preparing our annual membership letter, which will be sent by postal mail. Our goal is to:
1. Collect your details such as phone number, spouse name, and career related information;
2. Encourage you to support the club through dues.

For 2012, we have added a new $30 Basic Member level to encourage more alumni to support the club activities. In addition, we have added new benefits for dues paying members at the $50 Regular Member level and above, including a 10% discount all year long at our Game Watch site, the ocean view Prospect Bar & Grill in La Jolla, when you show your membership card.

For complete details, please visit our Membership page.

If you send us the requested information within the next two weeks, we can remove your name from our postal mailing and save on printing and postage.

Also note that Parents of Students, Subway Alumni and other fans of the University can also become dues paying members of the local club.

Thank you for your support. We look forward to your participation in 2012!

ND Professor of International Peacebuilding Speaking at USD on February 16

Thursday, February 16, 2012
Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Theatre
7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Cost: free

“Compassionate Presence: Faith-Based Peacebuilding in the Face of Violence”

We live in what Peter Berger called a “furiously religious” world that has served to justify and at times promote violence. Reflecting back across three decades of peacebuilding, John Paul Lederach, professor of international peacebuilding at Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, will trace the faith-based resources that contribute to what he calls compassionate presence and reflective spirituality, which underpin his engagement with protracted conflict and cycles of violence. Building from his book The Moral Imagination, the lecture will explore the disciplines of a practitioner-scholar committed to nonviolent social change.

John Paul Lederach, Ph.D.
Professor of International Peacebuilding
Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame

Widely known for his pioneering work on conflict transformation, Lederach is involved in conciliation work in Colombia, the Philippines and Nepal, and countries in East and West Africa. He has helped design and conduct training programs in 25 countries across five continents.

He is the author of When Blood and Bones Cry Out: Journeys Through the Soundscape of Healing and Reconciliation, The Moral Imagination: The Art and Soul of Building Peace, The Journey Toward Reconciliation, Building Peace: Sustainable Reconciliation in Divided Societies and Preparing for Peace: Confliction Transformation Across Cultures.

Lederach holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Colorado.
